Turning On Your Cooling System? Time To Start Thinking About Springtime MaintenanceIn the Phoenix area, there are many things you have to do to get prepared for warmer weather. One of the most important is to make sure that your cooling system is working as efficiently and reliably as possible. This will keep your home more comfortable, and over the course of the year will save you money.

Filters

Your air filters can have an enormous impact on how effectively your cooling system will work.

  • Clean your filter if it’s the type that can be cleaned. If not, replace your filter with a new one. You should do this at the start of the year and every month or two during the year.
  • Before you put the new or cleaned filter back in place, take the opportunity to vacuum out the area around the filter to avoid immediately dirtying the filter when you replace it.

Tight connections

Another important job you should do early in the year is to make sure all the connections between your cooling system and the room or rooms being cooled are tight.

  • With a window air conditioner, examine the seal between the window and the unit to ensure no air is getting through.
  • Check all vent covers and registers to ensure that they are tightly connected and repair any problems.
  • Inspect your ductwork to look for air leaks or damage to the insulation and repair any problems.

Cleaning the coils

The coils in your cooling unit play a key part in its proper functioning. It’s vital to keep them clean and clear of obstructions.

  • Clean the coils themselves, removing any dirt or debris that may have collected.
  • Clean the area around the unit to remove any loose dirt or debris that might later be blown onto the coils.
  • Trim back any trees or other vegetation that might drop debris onto the coils.
